The Catholic Community of St. Pius V in Pasadena exists to treasure and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We work to create the social and liturgical environment within which the Catholic Tradition can become the liberating experience of rebirth in Christ. Our mission is to turn loose on history lives in which the Truth, initially formulated in doctrine, has become a living testimony that will excite and confound the world until it comes to its senses.
St. Pius V Catholic Church has been ministering to the spiritual needs of the community in Pasadena, Texas for more than 70 years.
Father Joseph P. Coll, an army chaplain, came to Pasadena in June of 1941 to take a census of the Catholics living in the area. The church was organized and the first Mass said at Champion Paper Mill's Recreation Center. Later Masses were said in the Jackson Junior High Cafeteria. Sixty-five families were in the parish. Soon the present site was purchased and construction began on the church and rectory. Fr. Coll was called back into active duty that same year. Fr. A.L. O'Connell, better known as "Father Gus' replaced Fr. Coll as pastor on July 12th, 1942.
The first church and rectory were dedicated on May 24th, 1942. The Most Reverend C.E. Byrne,
Bishop of Galveston, presided at the dedication on the Feast of Pentecost. The church and rectory were built at the cost of $41,000.00 which included purchase of property.
As a result of the rapid growth of the parish, Fr. Bernard Roemer was named as the first assistant pastor. As the parish grew Basilian and Vincentian Fathers began to assist with the Sunday Masses.
St Pius V School was dedicated in 1947. The Sisters of Divine Providence opened the school in September with one-hundred enrolled. The faculty consisted of two nuns and one lay person. They were Sister Mary Dorothy Hunter, Principal, Sister Alexice Vinckeck and Mrs. Moon. A convent (now the Parish Life Center) was erected in 1953.
The present church was dedicated on April 5th, 1959 with an original seating capacity of eight hundred and fifty. The cost of the new church was $450.000.00. After the present church was built the former church was converted into classrooms. In 1961 a much needed cafetorium was built. In subsequent years, the parish added to the office facility, the parish recreation center (gym) and replaced the original organ with a pipe organ. During the 1980’s the church was extensively remodeled and now seats approximately 600.
Fr. Gus O'Connell retired August 25th, 1976. He was honored by the city of Pasadena as a man who served as a community spiritual leader for thirty-four
years. Mayor John Ray Harrison designated that day as "Father Gus" day.
